A side note: The unique log cabin I wrote about in my story, A Grand County Christmas, is based on an actual home in Grand County as was the delivery of milk and cheese. Grand County Colorado is filled with wonderful history, and I had the privilege of living on ranches in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains for over twenty five years. There are many remains of pioneer log cabins dotted throughout the trees and all around up there. I often wondered what it would be like if those walls could talk. What stories they would tell? Would they be one of hardships? Or of joy and happier times? Or what? We, as romance authors, so often romanticize the old west, when indeed it was filled with hard work and many struggles. Yes, there was romance back then, as well, for I've heard tales from some of the old pioneers themselves. And they were very romantic. Sigh. *smiling* Therefore, I hope you enjoy not only my story but those of the other talented authors of, A LOG CABIN CHRISTMAS, as we take you on a journey of what it was like to live and to build log cabins back in the days long since past. Happy reading! From a reviewer about my story: “A GRAND COUNTY CHRISTMAS - Debra Ullrick

(He passed away on November 9, 1979.) My dad is on the right. As a result of the war, my dad and the other soldiers in WW11 and every other war fought and still being fought paid, and are paying, a high price for our freedom. Whenever my dad was asleep, each time we woke Pops up, we had to stand way back from him becasue he always came up swinging his fisted hands. Many nights he would jump on top of my mom and yell, "Suicide bombers! Man the hatches!" He drank heavily to forget the horrors he lived in the war. Like buddies blown up in front of him, living in constant fear for the lives of those they loved and for their own life, and eating bread infested with maggots, killing other human beings while looking them in the face, just to name a few. At first Pops said they used to remove the maggots, then after awhile they just ate them because there were too many and they were hungry. He said when you're hungry, you'll eat anything. Thank God I've never known that kind of hunger. Please take a moment to remember all of those who in the past and in the present, who have and who are, fighting to keep the freedom we now enjoy. And be careful to not let anyone, political or otherwise, rob you of that freedom that cost so many wonderful men and women their lives and some, even their very sanity, their limbs and health, and their family life etc. GOD BLESS THE USA AND ALL THOSE WHO HAVE FOUGHT AND ARE FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM!!!

Back cover blurb:

Furious with God, Olivia Roseman vows to never trust Him again. Why should she? Once again her prayers have gone unanswered, and once again another loved one has been ripped from her. With no job and only a few dollars, Olivia makes a choice to start over again. Without God and without love. However, her handsome new boss isn't going to make forgetting God or keeping her vow to never love again very easy. Erik Cole questions the sanity of his moving from Swamper City, Alabama to Charity, West Virginia. That is, until he hires airbrush designer Olivia Roseman to paint his monster truck. When he senses that she’s a gal who is down on her luck, he vows to do whatever he can to help her. Only problem is, the little beauty creates more challenges than one. As his feelings toward her deepen, all Erik can do is hope and pray that one day Olivia will open up her heart to Christ—and to him.

"Ever had a day that nothing has gone right? Well, Olivia has had that kind of life. Bounced around, abused, and abandoned, life has now taken a very nasty turn again.

Knowing she has to get away or drown in the misery, she risks it all to become a designer for Eric's monster trucks. But when Eric develops feelings for his beautiful new employee, can Olivia let go of the past, or will this be deja vu all over again?

I loved this story! My only advice is to get out the Kleenex when Olivia finally comes clean about how rough life has been because when she starts to forgive, your tears won't stop for a long, long time!

Powerful and highly recommended!"

If you loved Deb Ullrick's wonderfully unique debut novel, The Bride Wore Coveralls--and I did--you're gonna love switching gears from mud bog racing to monster trucks in this fun and unique love story that cranks up the RPMs on romance in the fast lane. Like the beautiful body of a sleek and stylish racecar, there is so much more that makes this story haul and hum under the hood. Debra Ullrick has a real knack for unique storylines, likeable characters, easy dialogue and romance that truly revs, but even more so is the amazing spiritual message woven throughout, creating the perfect finish to a fun and fast-paced read.

(A letter from a reader.)I received the following letter from a reader. It blessed my heart and reminded me why I write. And that is... to touch reader's lives.

With his permission, I want to share it with you.

Here it is:

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Dear Mrs Ullrick
Thank you very much for writing The Unlikely Wife. I was really touched by it and I very much enjoyed that the references to the Bible weren't just there to make it more realistic for the timeframe, like in other Harlequin Historical/Love Inspired Historical books I've read so far. It's a really beautiful story, and, especially towards the end, I quite started to envy Michael a bit. I pray the Lord will one day give me a wife that's as good for me as Selina was for Michael, and I can't wait to see what he has in store for me. I pray the Lord will make me worthier each day, but I'm longing for it to happen as soon as possible. On the other hand I wouldn't want to risk having someone else instead of Him in the centre, when I'm already struggling at that as it is.
Again, I really thank you for this beautiful work. It is rare for any literature touching an avid reader like me so deeply. I will most likely read through many of your other books over time now. I'd certainly rather buy something like this than to buy just some Harlequin book by a random writer as I've done so far.
Kind Greetings from Switzerland
Joel

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Thank you, Joel, for your precious letter. It is one I will treasure forever.

After a near fatal accident in the Colorado wilderness, Jasmine Moore can no longer endure the harsh Steamboat Springs winters. Unable to get out much because of pain, she goes online in hopes of finding some new friends to fill the void the long, lonely winters bring. A budding friendship develops, and soon, Jasmine finds herself in danger.
Jack Warren is in love with Jasmine and has been for years. When he discovers she’s talking to strangers on the Internet, a pit fills his stomach, signaling something’s not right about one particular person. Can he convince her to give up her budding friendship before it’s too late? Will she ever come to love him as more than just a friend?

… if only she had listened …

Check back soon for this new release and more upcoming releases by Debra Ullrick

P.S. Can bitter rivals come to love each other? Fighting deep prejudice against her femininity, her choice of vehicle, and even her heritage, Camara Cole is determined to win the mud-bog racing championship this year. Her biggest competition seems also to be her worst enemy. Chase Lamar has been racing mud-boggers as long as Camara, and he grudgingly admits she's the best driver-mechanic he knows. Their rivalry has been long and bitter. But Chase is a new Christian. As he begins to change, he finds his relationship with Camara changing, too. When Camara's vehicle is sabatoged, she naturally blames Chase, despite a growing attraction. Chase must prove his innocence, but evidence points his way. When the smoke clears and the truth is known, will each be able to extend forgiveness, maybe even love?
GROOM WANTED, COMING AUGUST 2012

If you've read, The Unexpected Bride and The Unlikely Wife, then you will want to read Groom Wanted.

It's a perfect plan-best friends Leah Bowen and Jake Lure will each advertise for mail-order spouses in the papers, and then Jake will help select Leah's future husband, while Leah picks Jake's bride-to-be! Surely the ads will find them what they seek: a wife who'll appreciate Jake's shy charm and a groom who'll take Leah away from the Idaho Territory she detests. When the responses to the postings pour in, it seems all Leah's and Jake's dreams will soon come true. But the closer they each get to the altar, the less appealing marrying a stranger becomes. Is it too late to turn back- or to turn around and find the happiness they truly seek together, at last?

Groom Wanted is available for pre-order at Amazon.com, Barnes&Noble, Christianbooks.com and many other places.

Didn't fix a turkey dinner or anything, and sent hubby to his parent’s house. I wanted, no needed, to be alone, to mourn the loss of my mother without restraint.

This morning, my sister and I went to my mom's house to gather the last of her things. Seeing her house empty, knowing after 42 years of her living there the place would soon be sold, that it would no longer be her home, and that I would no longer drive over there to drop in and say hi, hit me hard.

Saying goodbye is excruciatingly painful. I wept for a long time.

Later on, I got to thinking about the first Thanksgiving dinner I prepared twenty-seven years ago. I lived in a small town where absolutely nothing was open on Thanksgiving Day. I made the dressing, stuffed the turkey, and did everything one does to prepare the bird for baking. The last thing I needed to do was to place the foil on top before sliding it into the oven. Only problem was...I didn't have any. Panicked, I darted to the phone and quickly dialed. When the party on the other end picked up, I didn't say hello or anything, I just blurted, "Mom, I don't have aluminum foil! What do I do?"
"That you, Deb?"
"Yes, it's me, Mom. What do I do?"
"What do you need foil for?"
"I don't know. You always used it."
"Doesn't your roaster lid fit?"
"Yes."
"Then use it," Mom calmly replied.
"But you always put aluminum foil on top of the turkey."
"Yes, but that’s only because the turkey was so big the roaster lid didn't fit."
"Oh."
Boy did I feel stupid.
We laughed over that one for years.

If you have a similar Thanksgiving story to share, I’d love to hear it.

Here are some pictures of my mom for you to see:

By: Debra Ullrick

For several years I lived in an original homestead cabin on a ranch in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. The ceiling was only six-foot four-inches high. Back then they built the ceilings low for heating purposes. Trust me, it worked. Talk about a warm…no…make that a sweltering house. Amazing how one small wood-burning stove kept us nice and toasty even in the below zero temperatures. That same practical ceiling also created a challenge for my 6’2” husband who wore a cowboy hat all the time. But he managed to cope.

I, however, struggled at times. Especially when frogs hopped across the carpet, or when I stepped on a stink bug who’d slipped inside through the broken chinking, or when I battled the many mice who inhabited the place. At first it was hard dealing with all the challenges, but then I grew to love the place and oftentimes wondered about the people who had lived there. What they were like. Where they came from. How they survived the harsh winters, and wishing the walls could talk.

Living there had piqued my interest in the history of Grand County where I lived on ranches for over 28 years. I contacted the historical society and acquired many books about Grand County. The house described in my story, A Grand County Christmas, stemmed from an actual cabin in that area. To make it more interesting, I combined the details of that cabin with a couple of other homesteads there, along with their history and some of the interesting cultures of the people who settled in that area. The more I wrote, the more I knew that I wanted to incorporate my own family’s heritage into the story, which was Germans from Russia. I’m so glad I did.

My 87 year old mom, who answered my many questions about our heritage, passed away two weeks ago. When, A Grand County Christmas, was completed, my prayer was that my mom would live long enough to read my story. God answered that prayer.

I'm sorry I've not been posting lately.

My 87 year old mother was in the hospital for two weeks and we didn't know if she would make it or not. She didn't. She went on to be with the Lord a week ago today. (October 30, 2011)

Things have been hectic and extremely emotional to say the least. And now we are going through her things while my sister from Kansas is out here. It's been really difficult doing that. We have a long ways to go still so my visits here will be brief.

However, I will be posting a special blog on Nov 16th, so please stop by and join me then.

Thank you and God bless you all.

Until next time....
